Dear Guest,

What a week it's been with the refreshing and uplifting news to hear Kamala Harris will be the next Vice-President of the United States as part of President Joe Biden's leadership team. As a former prosecutor and senator, Harris has been no stranger to smashing glass ceilings in her industries. Her Vice-Presidency will make history with her instatement as the first black American woman and first Asian American woman to hold America's second highest office. It's a powerful message to women and young girls that you can be what you can see.

Leaning into that positive energy, our WNA Christmas Charity Luncheon (Thursday 26 November) is coming into the front vision mirror now with only two weeks to go! This week (with less than 2 weeks until the event!) I am proud to announce Laser Clinics Australia as our Silver Event Sponsor.

I am also excited to announce that Starfire Diamond Jewellery and owner Shweta Khan have donated the Major Prize for our Christmas Charity Raffle. If you like diamonds, trust me you will be impressed! Please reach out if you have donations for our raffle - small or large they will all be appreciated - and for any last minute bookings, don't hesitate to contact me or book through the WNA website.

Socialise at Sunset is locked in for today (4.30pm AEST) so please join us for an hour of connection and conversation. Our first post-Covid Hobart event was a great success, so much so, we've decided to host another Hobart Luncheon on December 4 - read on for further details!

In honour of Naidoc Week later in this communique you will find inspiring news about Indigenous business success stories and a book or two written by Indigenous authors to keep you company on your work and rest breaks.

Lastly, we know how important STEM is to our country and our future workforce, so read on to hear about who will be Australia's next Chief Scientist!

As always, I am here to help, so please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend!

Janelle ♥

Weeding the garden is one of those treasured jobs on my checklist, but another one for you is updating your member profile on the WNA website. It's a great time as we lead into the holiday season and people are looking to shop for gifts, vouchers or using quieter time in your work day to boost your business with the services of WNA members.

ATTRACT NEW CUSTOMERS AND IMPROVE YOUR BRAND WITH INFORMATIVE BLOGS!

Your WNA blogs have been all those and more so keep them coming!

SPREAD SOME KINDNESS AMONGST YOUR FELLOW WNA MEMBERS TODAY!

I love a good kindness story and today we celebrate World Kindness Day in Australia. What a great opportunity and reminder that even the small acts of kindness can make someone else's day. A great example I had today was just a small thing but it made me smile - I was at the grocery store early this morning and only had a few things to buy. A lady in front kindly offered for me to go ahead of her in the line - a small gesture but made my heart smile with gratitude!

Just like Captain Kindness, we can all spread some kindness amongst our WNA community and within our friendships and families today, with some great ideas below:

  • Pay someone a compliment on their business success
  • Buy your work colleague or friend coffee or lunch today
  • Offer to help someone with their bags
  • Help refer someone in your network for a job or potential work opportunity
  • Keep someone company who may be on their own
  • Be the best role model for your family and your neighbours
  • Buy Australian made products and services.

INDIGENOUS BUSINESSES SECTOR AMONG FASTEST GROWING IN AUSTRALIA!

The Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman (ASFBEO) Kate Carnell is encouraging Australians to support indigenous businesses, as the nation celebrates Naidoc Week 2020. There are as many as 16,000 indigenous-owned businesses in Australia and that is expected to grow to more than 18,000 in the next five years. Supply Nation data shows the number of indigenous businesses is growing by 12.5% each year.

ASFBEO profiles a number of inspiring indigenous businesses that have embraced reciprocity as a reflection of culture in the way they do business. See below for some great examples!
Kakadu Tiny Tots - Baby clothing and authentic aboriginal products, using only organic and sustainable products.
Willyama Services -  Aboriginal owned and Supply Nation Certified Information Technology and Cyber professional services business.
Nood Australia - Skincare and cleaning products using Australian Native Botanicals.
The Unexpected Guest - Certified organic breakfast products.

AUSTRALIA'S NEXT CHIEF SCIENTIST WILL BE A WOMAN!

Dr Cathy Foley is a physicist and CSIRO's current chief scientist and she has long been an advocate for getting more women into STEM and improving conditions for women already working in such fields. Dr Foley was announced this week as Australia's new Chief Scientist in 2021. Dr Foley will be the second woman appointed to the role, and her appointment comes at an important time, given the need for urgent action on climate change and moving forward through the pandemic.

Dr Foley wants young people to see that science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) are really great careers that are exciting and pay well and contribute greatly to society. She has also spoken powerfully about her mission to get more women into leadership positions in science, encouraging girls in high school to study maths and sciences, and spurring women to put themselves forward for promotions. WNA wishes Dr Foley all the best in her new role!

INSPIRATIONAL READING FROM WRITER CLAIRE G. COLEMAN

Claire G. Coleman is a writer from Western Australia who identifies with the Noongar People. She is well known across Australia for her award winning debut novel Terra Nullius, a thrilling work of fiction that imagined a future Australia under the threat of colonisation again. Her new novel, The Old Lie is the story of two people whose lives are caught up in a war and the glorious lies that underpin it. Her second novel has made similar waves to her first!
