Dear Guest,

"You don't need a title to be a leader - you lead by example" - Jamie Woodburn

I am a bit of a quote person and at some moments and on many days a good quote can give me that energy pick me up that I need. Do you find that sometimes? I have been fortunate to lead Women's Network Australia for many years now and I have recently been reminded numerous times of how anyone can be a leader in our homes, in our networks, and in our businesses. A leader could be that colleague that supports and welcomes a new team member, or a staff member that regularly cleans up the dirty staff kitchen hamper that we all dread doing! You could be the CEO, the janitor, or the P & C canteen lady but we all have opportunities in our communities every day to stand up and be counted. Jamie is right - anyone can lead by example with good values and a positive mindset.

Thank you to everyone that attended our "Getting Real" networking event yesterday in Brisbane - it was a fantastic event and so wonderful to hear the stories of our members and how they have been working together with great success. Our Hobart members will be enjoying food, drinks, good company and the wonderful wisdom of Gail Eaton-Briggs today, so I look forward to hearing how it went over the weekend! Next week I'll include wrap ups of both events for interested e-news members. I love to see empowered women, empowering women! Thanks also to our members who tuned into another collaborative Socialise at Sunset - so wonderful to see so many of you online!

2021 is certainly heating up on the events scene and it's great for Australians that we can all socialise more in person. Our WNA Charity High Tea is building nicely, we will have captivating conversations on the couch and it would be amazing if WNA members could donate some prizes for the charity raffle!

There are also three other events I've included this week which may suit our Melbourne, Canberra and Brisbane members - read on to learn more about a night of fashion and styling, the Enlighten Festival, and also a month-long event designed to heighten the importance of climate change.

This week's Member of the Week wants businesses to maximise a healthy profit and cash flow and another empowered WNA Member provides comprehensive thoughts on how to manage a property settlement.

If you need another night-time read, there's a business book to inspire you and help you add value, and excitingly I listened to a podcast this week from Warringah MP Zali Steggall and I think you will learn loads from it too!

It feels like February is slipping away and Christmas only feels like yesterday. On that note, I wish you all kindness, composure and prosperity as you take some downtime this weekend to read this communique and spend time with your loved ones.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend!

Janelle ♥

FEBRUARY -  A MONTH OF SUSTAINABILITY AND CLIMATE - NOW OR NEVER!

In an age of environmental, social and economic disruption, it is vital that we don't lose sight of the bigger picture and keep our eye firmly on the mission to sustain our planet. The 2021 National Sustainable Living Festival (NSLF) is an iconic Australian event presenting over 300 events exploring climate change and sustainability. The Festival hosts a packed month-long program of local and international talks, forums, workshops, film, art and design from 1 - 28 February 2021.

The NSLF is not just an event, it's a movement of change makers. With over 100,000 visits every year, the event is the largest sustainability festival in Australia — and not just in numbers, but also in impact. By showcasing cutting-edge solutions to ecological and social challenges, the Festival fosters and provides tools for the change we want to see and the difference we want to make in the world.

There are sessions on everything from pop-up recycling, refurbished fashion, emergency action for negative emissions, and many more and if you aren't in Melbourne there are plenty of online events to choose from.
IF YOU ARE IN CANBERRA CHECK OUT THE ENLIGHTEN FESTIVAL 2021!

Canberra will be alive and energetic in February and March with the annual Enlighten Festival. Events run from 26 February to 14 March and will include:

WNA BLOGGING - WE WANT TO READ MORE OF YOUR BLOGS AND ADVICE!

I thought Bronwyn Condon's WNA blog on property settlement, which is different for every person, was full of good advice and wisdom. You may have built a family business together, have complicated business and asset structures, and/or funds in a self-managed super fund. She invites those involved to consider four basic steps when approaching a fair property settlement:

  • What do you own? - You need to work out what you and your partner own. It doesn't matter who legally owns the assets or owes the liabilities everything gets added to the pot.
  • How did you get those assets? - Were assets gifted to you or did you work to get those assets? Contributions could be financial or non-financial (time).
  • Considering your future requirements - Property settlement needs to consider the future - are there children involved? Have one person been a stay at home parent?
  • Is property settlement fair and equitable? What's truly fair and equitable needs to be considered and other factors such as tax implications.

A BUSINESS BOOK TO INSPIRE YOU AND TEACH YOU TO ADD VALUE!

What do you really value? The impact of COVID-19 has forced many of us to re-evaluate what really matters, yet we often only think about it in times of trouble. How can you learn to bring more value to your relationships, your work and your life? In this new book, leadership development specialist and author Mark Carter takes a deep dive into the meaning of value - a concept we throw around but is at the heart of every decision and action we take and ultimately determines our effectiveness and impact in the world.

Insightful, practical and accessibly written, Carter shows why truly knowing what we value - and why - is the real basis of personal and professional success. Find out more at www.markcarter.com.au

A PODCAST AND A LEADER WHO DOESN'T LIKE TO TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER!

She's the Olympic athlete turned barrister turned independent MP who brought down a former Prime Minister. In the latest Leadership Lessons podcast, Independent Member for Warringah Zali Steggall shares just how sport and law have shaped her character and determination - which particularly matters now as she pushes for real climate action. As a competitive ski racer, she trained really hard and developed her character and drive.

"I trained really hard. And I really put in. I listened to the coaches. I don't like cutting corners. I like doing the full sets, the full reps, everything that needs to be done. I never took no for an answer in the sense of anyone telling me what my limitations were."

And in a world where we need more climate change advocates and heroes, Zali Steggall MP is leading the way. Last year, Steggall introduced her climate change bills to Parliament that seek to legislate net zero emissions by 2050. Listen here for more leadership inspiration from this determined woman.
